They live in harmony with nature, eating what they produce on the land or what the forest offers them, and their homes and clothing are 100% made of natural materials. Through their understanding and cultural heritage, they have recognized their role as guardians and healers of Mother Earth and are aware of the importance of their task, especially in today's time. However, they have lost many of their sacred, ritual places since the discovery of Columbus and the occupation by the colonial rulers, and thus they lack the basis for fulfilling their task. Their motivation behind trading coffee is not the desire to change their society or way of life according to Western models, but to buy back these important places in order to maintain their life in the old culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAlthough the coffee plant is not native to South America, it often grows wild in the forests today. The Kogi only harvest their beans from such free-growing plants and cultivate them without interfering with nature. Therefore, they consciously refrain from using fertilizers or cultivating higher-yielding varieties. The Kogi do not approve of the way nature is treated in our latitudes. In their view, we have not understood the nature in which they have lived for a long time. Although they would easily meet all criteria of the organic or fair trade labels, they do not value our certificates and do without them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe project \"kalashe\" originated from the meeting of the Kogi chief Màma José Gabriel Limaco with Oliver Driver. For the 2015\/2016 harvest, the Kogi were paid almost double the current coffee market price, which is significantly above fair trade conditions.
